NYNHORYN, KEENAN CALYHAN

Nicknames/Aliases: Nine
Age: 23
Appearance: Chris Pine
Keenan, or Nine, as he is known to his friends, is not too preoccupied with clothing, as he usually has a lot more pressing matters on his mind. He wears whatever he can find without getting into too much trouble. Since there were a great number of department stores abandoned after the upload, he usually manages to find something new every now and then, and when he does, it's usually an Eddie Bauer sweater, jeans, t-shirts, and hats. Hats are the only thing he allows himself to wear for the fun of it instead of just for practicality, although there's an element of that in there too, since they do keep his face out of the sun.

Positive Traits:
1. Conscientious - Keenan is meticulous when it comes to things he is working on. He is a bit of a perfectionist, and as a result, if he's played a part in the design or creation of something, chances are you won't need to check it twice or second guess it.
2. Industrious - He's a hard worker, and isn't afraid to put in a little extra effort to get something done. Whether it's physical labor or just trying to figure something out, he has a hard time taking a break until it's actually done.
3. Charismatic - No one really knows what it is about Keenan that is so appealing that the remainder of physical human life will, for the most part, follow his lead. There are people who are part of the resistance who are older and probably smarter than he is, but somehow, the role of leader has fallen to him. People seem to want to follow him.
4. Determined - Keenan refuses to give up, in spite of the fact that many people believe that the Resistance's fight against the Net and the Sentinels is a loosing battle. Running, hiding, surviving - it's tiring, even more now than it has been over the past few years since Keenan came into leadership of the Resistance, but giving up isn't an option.
5. Courageous - He has looked death in the eye on several occasions, and the fact that he's survived has given Keenan a calm sort of resolve, a determination that the fear of dying will not keep him from doing what he knows he needs to do. He knows there are people who count on him, and he refuse to let them down.
6. Compassionate - Keenan is as much a survivalist as the next remaining person on earth, but he has been known to take risks to save the lives of people who don't seem to have apparent value to the Resistance. He looks out for the Hobb twins, in spite of the fact that a lot of the more coldly practical members of the Resistance thought they shouldn't bother.
7. Observant - He has extremely sharp eyesight, but beyond that, Keenan remembers the things that he sees. Potential resources, places to hide, things that other people might think useless, he notices them, commits them to memory, and can recall them when he needs to.
8. Positive - It's Keenan's job as leader of the Resistance to make sure morale stays high, and he does his best to do that job. He knows they're in a tough spot, but he tries not to let his own doubts show through when he's around others.
Negative Traits:
1. Insecure - Leading the remnants of humanity is a big responsibility for a twenty-three-year-old guy, and Keenan is well aware of that. In spite of the fact that most of the people involved with the Resistance are willing to follow him, he still doubts himself.
2. Withrdrawn - Leadership actually goes against Keenan's very nature. When he was younger, he was never the one who volunteered first, never the one who spoke before thinking, and he was most certainly never the one who took charge of the situation at hand. He fights every day to overcome the part of him that just wants to step back and let someone take over for him.
3. Risk-taking - When it comes to his own life, Keenan will gamble with it if it means the possibility of gaining something that might help the survival of the group. He is also, however, sometimes willing to take risks that other people don't always approve of, and has to remind himself to listen to their opinions.
4. Stubborn - If Keenan thinks he's right, it's hard to convince him otherwise. That's not to say that it can't be done; he's not stupid, either, and when confronted with solid evidence, is willing to change his mind. But it takes some serious convincing.
5. Distrusting - This is probably Keenan's most obvious characteristic. It has helped him to survive, but it's also resulted in some strife between members of the Resistance. Keenan doesn't trust easily, and while his compassionate nature gives him the desire to help people, his inherent cynicism warns him against it.
6. Frank - Keenan says what he means, almost all of the time. This can be a little offensive to some people, especially when what he's saying seems to be insulting to them.
7. Moody - The stress of leadership takes its toll on a man, and Keenan is no exception. He's not bipolar, but he's close, hopeful and optimistic at one moment, then despondent and pessimistic at the next. He does his best to conceal this and present an even composure.
8. Reckless - While Keenan won't just send his friends and comrades out into open fire without seriously considering the entire situation, he tends to be a little careless with his own life. He does things without thinking, and while his instincts have kept him alive up until now, there have been some close calls.
Knowledge/Skills: Keenan is a skilled pilot and has valuable military training. His father was a member of the US Air Force before the upload, and before he was captured and uploaded, he taught Keenan virtually everything he knew about tactics and aviation. Of course, Keenan did a little research and learning on his own, and today, he uses that knowledge to help himself and the Resistance out. Fuel for planes is scarce, but when they find it, and when he dares to venture out into the line of sight of the Sentinels, he runs scouting missions (and even attacks) with a few of the other Resistance members he's begun training.

Family: Father, Calyhan Nynhoryn, who's somewhere in the Net. His mother died before the upload, and he has no siblings.
Romantic Involvements: None
Birthplace: Boston, Massachusetts.
Current Residence: Amsterdam
History: Keenan was born before the upload, to Captain Calyhan Nynhoryn and his wife, Mara. Captain Nynhoryn was an Air Force pilot, and something of a war hero, decorated in 2016 for valor in Kuwait. He was somewhat withdrawn during Keenan's early years, and Keenan's earliest memories are of his mother; she took him to school every day, and picked him up afterwards. He was rarely at home without her, and he grew up under the close supervision of both parents after his father returned from active duty. They had a relatively happy life, and paid little attention to the new Net fad. Neither of Keenan's parents bothered with it, and Keenan, in spite of his classmates' stories of their exploits on the Net, wasn't interested in it either. But during Keenan's ninth year, his father began talking about it more, expressing his concern at the increasing rate at which people were devoting their lives to this obsession. And then came the day Calyhan had been afraid of, the day it seemed the world might end. The upload. The mass exodus of humanity from the bodies they had been given to the next step in human evolution, or so they claimed.
Calyhan and Mara took their son and fled their home in Boston, traveling to Boston on one of the last official flights, claiming that they wanted to upload on the server there when they really had no intention of doing so. London was mayhem; there were riots in the streets and the Net soldiers, early predecessors of the Sentinels, were on constant patrol. Mara was killed in a civilian uprising, not uploaded, actually killed, and Calyhan, desperate to protect himself and his son from the same fate, left London to avoid being spotted. He'd been on the news when he'd gotten his medal back in 2016, and he was afraid someone would recognize him. Military and government personnel had been rounded up early in the upload operation, and it was remarkable that he'd managed to escape to begin with.
His rank made him a target for the Net government, but it also seemed to make people want to follow him. They kept on the move, picking up others who refused the upload on the way, and settled for a while in Geneva, Switzerland, where they remained undetected for three years. Keenan's thirteenth birthday came and went while they were there, but shortly after that, the small colony noticed increased Sentinel activity in the area and abandoned Geneva for Copenhagen. Surprisingly, the Sentinels didn't find them there right away. Six years passed in Copenhagen, long enough for Calyhan to teach Keenan everything he knew about flying and military tactics. The year Keenan turned nineteen, though, the Sentinels' patrols grew more and more frequent, and before the year was up, it was clear that the Net was onto them. Calyhan led the survivors to a temporary staging grounds in Berlin, where they located passenger jets and enough fuel to get them off of the continent. Calyhan had been in contact with other Resistance in Sydney, and they planned to relocated there, hoping that it would be far enough from the Net's base of operations for them to be safe there indefinitely.
Calyhan was to go first in one plane, then Keenan and two other pilots would follow in three more, carrying all of the survivors with them. But they made their move too late. The night they were scheduled to leave, Sentinels broke into the temporary fortress in Berlin, capturing Calyhan and over half of the others. Keenan had no choice but to take his jet and escape while he still could, and they made the short flight to Amsterdam, lost and confused. Keenan lost his father that night, but more than that, the Resistance had lost their leader. And so Keenan, at just short of twenty years of age, inherited the leadership of the remaining physical human race. It wasn't a monarchy; he was no prince and his father had not been any sort of king or emperor, but no one questioned his leadership.
He took his new role very seriously, and was determined to make sure that his people stayed in touch with what the Net was learning about them. Through forays in fighter jets into enemy territory (mainly in Boston, which was soon discovered to be the information hub for the Net on the eastern seaboard), they discovered that Calyhan, once known as Suspect Eight, had not been killed, but uploaded. And Suspect Nine, the next in the Net's radar, now that one through eight had been captured or killed, was none other than Keenan himself.
It was his best friend and right hand man who first noticed the similarity between Keenan's new number and the first syllable of his surname, and it was also he who began calling Keenan by the number instead of his name. It became an inside joke, but before long, it stuck. The name change paralleled Keenan's transition from "the Old Man's son" to newly accepted leader of the Resistance, and his new number/nickname almost became something of a title. Today, he tries to continue the fight his father began, all the while attempting to find a way for the two worlds to live in peace with one another, and maybe, someday, a way for him to communicate with the father he hopes is not gone forever.
